Christopher Lambert achieved world fame with the premiere of ‘The Immortals’, an action and fantasy film that gave rise to four sequels and several television series
The French-American performer became one of the best-known faces of the 1980s, but ended up pigeonholed in the role that brought him stardom
What happened to Ralph Macchio, the protagonist of ‘Karate Kid’?
The 80s left a multitude of films to remember. ‘Back to the Future’, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘Die Hard’, ‘Terminator’… Many of the most beloved and well-known sagas in the history of cinema saw the light of day during this decade.which also left us other great titles in film history such as ‘The Shining’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Cinema Paradiso’, ‘Akira’, ‘ET The Extraterrestrial’ or ‘Brazil’, among many others.
One of the sagas that started in the 80s and managed to win the affection of the public was ‘Los inmortales’, a set of five action and fantasy films that even had two television series centered in the same universe.
The saga of ‘The Immortals’ was born in 1986 with the premiere of the film of the same name, a feature film directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. The film, although it was not successful in the United States, it did get a great reception in the international market and became one of those cult films that are still remembered today.
The film, in addition to giving rise to several sequels, launched its main protagonist to fame: Christopher Lambert, who gave life to Connor MacLeod. Lambert, who before playing MacLeod had already had some successful roles in the world of cinema such as ‘Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan, the king of the monkeys’ or ‘Subway’, saw his career take off with the premiere of ‘The Immortals’ and how he became one of the most recognized faces of the decade, but what is he now?
Christopher Lambert, a prolific actor who rose to the top in the 80s
Born in 1957 in New York, Lambert is a French-American actor son of a French diplomat and a Belgian psychologist. Raised in Switzerland, where his family moved when he was two years old, Lambert studied acting at the Paris Conservatoire and made his film debut with a cameo appearance in the 1979 French film Goodbye, Colleagues. by Sergio Gobbi.
His first relevant role within the seventh art was in the 1980 French film ‘Le bar du téléphone’, by Claude Barrois, where he played Paul “Bébé” Franchi, but recognition would not come until 1984the year in which ‘Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan, the king of the monkeys’, a film in which he was the protagonist, was released.
His role as Tarzan made him known to the public, but it was the 1986 premiere of ‘Los Inmortales’ that brought his career to the top. In between, the actor participated in two other feature films: ‘Paroles et musique’, by Élie Chouraqui, and ‘Subway’, by Luc Besson, for which he received the César award for best actor.
The premiere of ‘The Immortals’ It brought Christopher Lambert to worldwide fame, but it also defined the rest of his career.. And it is that, as has happened to many other actors, the character for which he achieved stardom ended up pigeonholing him and, ironically, reducing his options within the seventh art. Despite the fact that Lambert’s filmography includes a good variety of film and television titles, including three of the sequels to ‘The Immortals’, ‘Beowulf’ or ‘Mortal Kombat’, none of them achieved the success of the Russell Mulcahy film.
Lambert He last appeared in the world of cinema in the 2018 film ‘Bel Canto’, by Paul Weitz, although his last acting role dates from 2020, the year in which he participated in an episode of the Inspector Marleau series. On a personal level, the actor was married between 1988 and 1994 to actress Diane Lane, with whom he has a daughter, Eleanor Jasmine, and to Jaimyse Haft, whom he divorced in 2006. His last known partner is Alba Parietti, with which started dating in 2016.
