Düsseldorf Fortuna’s soon-to-be coach Christoph Preusser is still in the final spurt of the season in the Regionalliga Südwest with the U23 of SC Freiburg. On Saturday he and his team could have made the championship perfect. But this venture failed.
It could have been a boozy Saturday evening in Breisgau. The U23 of SC Freiburg received FC 08 Homberg. A victory for the sports club and the championship in the Regionalliga Südwest would have been perfect. And thus also the walkout that coach Christian Preusser would wish for his time in Freiburg.

Because the 37-year-old is known to switch to the second division at Fortuna Düsseldorf for the coming season. “I really want to finish my job in Freiburg successfully, because we have the opportunity here to create something that is historical in the club,” said Preusser at his presentation as Fortuna coach.

The championship celebration in Breisgau had to be postponed. Preusser’s team surprisingly lost 1-0 against Homberg. Damjan Marceta scored the only goal of the day for the guests in the 72nd minute. This leaves Freiburg with 89 points and still has two games to play. The closest pursuer from Elversberg is eight points behind, but also one less game under his belt. So Preusser and his team have to get at least two points from the next two encounters in order to be able to achieve promotion to the third division on their own.

The Elversbergers will not play until next Tuesday at TSV Steinbach Haiger. If the Saarlanders do not win there, Preusser would become champion on the couch. That could also provide a significant relaxation for the native Berliner. Because he officially has his last game with Freiburg on June 12th.

If the championship were already established beforehand, he could shut down a little earlier and mentally prepare for the coming acclimatization phase in Düsseldorf. Because the season preparation at Fortuna starts around June 20th. So everything is very tight for Preusser. “Yes, but we can do that,” he says himself. A championship in the back would certainly ease the initial stress in Düsseldorf.
