The students of Hesse and Thuringia start their well-deserved Christmas holidays tomorrow, the Bavarian children have to hold out until Friday.
When school is over, the roads and highways in Germany will be busier. ADAC suspects motorists will have to plan most of the time for December 23 and 26.
According to the ADAC, the routes most at risk of traffic jams are the A1, A3, A7, A8 and A9. However, there are no closures for the entire weekend.
Holiday traffic, both to ski resorts in the Alps and to local areas, and people returning from family visits are cited as the reason for the high traffic volume.
Also due to the arrival of winter, black ice or heavy snow, drivers may have to plan for longer travel times.
But travelers have reason to breathe a sigh of relief: in many places, construction work has already been halted for the winter months. And on December 25 and 26, trucks weighing more than 7.5 tonnes will be banned from driving between midnight and 10pm.
If you get stuck in a traffic jam in the next few days, remember to form an emergency lane!
What many don’t know is that the hard shoulder must be formed when traffic is about to stop, and not just when help arrives from behind with blue lights and sirens.
In an emergency lane, those driving in the left lane turn left, while drivers in all other lanes turn right.
The following routes and regions are particularly at risk of traffic jams:
A1 Cologne – Dortmund – Bremen – Hamburg
A2 Dortmund – Hanover – Braunschweig – Berlin
A1/A3/A4 Cologne ring
A3 Cologne – Frankfurt – Nuremberg – Passau
A4 Kirchheimer Dreieck – Erfurt – Dresden
A5 Hattenbacher Dreieck – Karlsruhe
A6 Mannheim – Heilbronn – Nuremberg
A7 Hamburg – Hannover and Würzburg – Füssen/Reutte
A8 Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – Munich – Salzburg
A9 Munich – Nuremberg – Berlin
Berlin ring A10
A24 Hamburg – Berlin
A61 Mönchengladbach – Koblenz – Ludwigshafen
A81 Stuttgart – Singen
A93 Inn Valley Triangle – Kufstein
A95/B2 Munich – Garmisch-Partenkirchen
A99 Munich ring road
We wish you a safe journey and a Merry Christmas!
