Berlin’s health senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) has warned against short-term Christmas shopping before the lockdown announced for Wednesday. “Now please don’t run off and buy gifts,” she said, according to the Senate Administration on Berlin radio. Consumers should “take it easy” at Christmas and not have a party on New Year’s Eve. It remains to be seen whether easing will be possible again from January 10, she said. That also depends on the number of patients in the hospitals, Kalayci was quoted by the Senate administration on Twitter.
The federal and state governments agreed on a hard lockdown on Sunday. The retail trade has to close largely from Wednesday. Exceptions include grocery stores, pharmacies and drug stores. Hairdressing and cosmetic salons are also closed.
