Getting Christmas presents may be a problem this year. The worldwide shortage of chips and other components significantly affects the electronics and toys market. Vendors are facing limited deliveries from China, which is reflected in the amount of goods in stores. For example, mobile phones, flashlight cars, dolls or stuffed animals are starting to arrive on the shelves.
Electronics and toys are usually the most popular gifts under the Christmas tree. This year, however, there is a danger that those who would like such a gift will eventually be disappointed. “There may not be tablets, dolls, toys with chips, because it is simply not enough to be transported from China on time or they have not been produced at all yet,” warns economist Lukáš Kovanda.
In addition to chips, for example, plastics or some basic components are missing. The problem with the supply of goods is solved by sellers of electronics and toys.
“We feel outages at the main suppliers. The second thing is the impact on the specific types of goods, such as robotic toys, which are very popular in the Christmas season or toy cars,” said Hamleys toy store manager Jana Doležalová.
“Deteriorated product availability is also caused by congestion and more expensive shipping. In some cases, it was up to eight to ten times higher, so it was not worthwhile for some suppliers to bring such goods to Europe,” explains Pavla Hobíková, a spokeswoman for the Mall Group e-shop group.
According to the sellers, the biggest problem at the moment is with orders for battery toys. But stuffed animals are also becoming a scarce commodity. “The situation in China has really affected this very popular assortment. Unfortunately, we are struggling with what we were used to by default, such as the hundreds of teddy bear species, will not be the standard this year. But we are trying to get what we can,” she said. Doležalová.
For example, cheaper laptops are missing in electronics stores and there is also a shortage of mobile phones. There is also a waiting period of several months on the game console.

“The situation has been complicated there since the beginning of last autumn, when this problem manifests itself in the entire global market. The consoles are very difficult to access and we are still covering up pre-orders from last year,” said Alza.cz store spokeswoman Daniela Chovancová.
“The shortage of goods can last a very long time in 2022. As for some of those components, such as chips, the situation may persist until 2023. This means next Christmas can be very seriously affected by this shortage,” Kovanda predicts.
According to experts, we must prepare for the fact that the shortage of goods on the market will also be reflected in prices. Some products could rise in price by tens of percent.
