Christmas in corona time: according to the government, everything depends on the coming weeks

Prime Minister Rutte and Minister De Jonge just said this at the press conference about the approach to the corona virus. The decision about this will be taken on December 8, said Rutte and De Jonge. Then the measures could possibly be relaxed from mid-December.

Broadening

“What we want to do is see in mid-December whether we can give a little more room if we are on indicators of level 2,” said De Jonge. “That means ten ICU admissions per day or 3,600 new infections per day. Only then can we think about expanding it again. We expect that in mid-December. Then we can do something we want so badly.”

The goal is to get to level 1. According to De Jonge, this is expected to be achieved in mid-January, if the figures continue to fall.

Test without complaints

The mandatory mouth caps will also be introduced on 1 December and from the same date it is possible to have yourself tested without complaints if you have been in contact with a corona patient. If after a test after five days of quarantine it appears that there is no contamination, that person can go outside as usual.

Now you have to quarantine for ten days after contact, and you cannot get tested without complaints.

Group size expanded

The corona rules that were set two weeks ago will automatically expire after tomorrow. This means that the group size will be expanded again. If a maximum of two people are first received at home, that will go to three people at home after tomorrow.

The allowed group size outside is four people.

Open again

In addition, museums, libraries, amusement parks, zoos, concert halls, casinos, swimming pools and music stages may open their doors again this week. For those locations, the restrictions that were already in force in recent months still apply. This means that the maximum number of thirty people applies and that reservations for a certain period of time remain mandatory.

Group lessons in gyms will be allowed again, but will be limited to groups of four, with a maximum of thirty people.

Fons Lambie: ‘Cabinet very careful because of fear of third wave’

Political reporter Fons Lambie sees that the cabinet is struggling with a decision on easing around Christmas. “They are afraid of making a promise now that they will have to come back to later. They are afraid of relaxing too much and then starting a third wave in 2021. The only thing that can be done today is that extra tightening from two weeks ago. , can be lifted. But that’s a very slight relaxation. “

The partial lockdown will therefore continue to exist. “The catering industry has to remain closed for a while”, says Lambie. “A decision on this is not expected until the beginning of December. Some people here in The Hague hope that the restaurants will be able to open from mid-December, but it is really not that far yet.” According to Lambie, much hope is now placed on the expanded testing capacity. “They also want to test people without complaints and shorten the quarantine.”

The heated discussions in the cabinet have been slightly less in recent weeks, says Lambie. “There are currently no major quarrels in the cabinet, but there is grumbling and complaining. Such as about why the vaccination should take a year and why the roadmap, with scaling up and phasing out the corona measures, does not work. There are no difficult measures to take today, but the decisions to be taken in the coming weeks about easing and scaling down is almost as difficult, perhaps even more difficult. At what pace can things be let go? “
