Christmas Fire Safety and Insurance Coverage: Who Pays for Damages in Case of Fire

– Advent candles, tea light ovens, Christmas trees: The risk of fire during Advent and Christmas is high. But who pays for damage if there is a fire in your own four walls?

It’s a moment that no one wants to experience for themselves: the small flame of the candle is preparing for the Advent wreath. The table starts to burn. Now the fire has to be put out quickly before more furniture or the entire apartment is damaged. Fire damage regularly occurs during the Christmas season – often caused by flames from winter decorations. In order to be prepared in the event of an emergency, it is worth taking a look at your own insurance portfolio.

Fire at Christmas: liability, residential building and household contents insurance

“If there is actually a fire during the Christmas season, private liability insurance plays the biggest role. Residential building insurance is also indispensable for building owners. Own furniture etc. are covered by household contents insurance,” explains Bianca Boss from the Association of Insured Persons.

For tenants, the damage can quickly become significant if rental items are damaged. Rental items mean permanently installed inventory such as a fitted kitchen or bathtub. “Tenants should make sure that their private liability insurance covers rental property damage – including living spaces, buildings and land – to a sufficient extent,” says Boss.

Waiver of gross negligence

If you are a house or apartment owner yourself, home insurance can be important. It pays for damage to the house caused by fire or extinguishing water. Household contents insurance compensates for damage to all movable objects – including furniture or clothing.

To ensure that no deductions are made, it is worth taking a closer look at the contract. “Good tariffs completely waive the right to reduce the insurance benefit if the insured event was caused by gross negligence. We therefore recommend that the insurance contracts include such damage up to the full amount of the insured sum,” says Boss. Otherwise, the fire caused by an unattended candle is often not fully covered by insurance.

Liability insurance for fire resulting in personal injury

In the worst case, people can also be injured if there is a fire in the premises. Private liability insurance is responsible for ensuring that damage to relatives, friends and everyone else is also covered. According to Boss, the sum insured should be at least 15 million euros for property, personal and financial damage.

To ensure that none of these insurance policies are used during the Christmas season, it is worth carrying out your own security inspection of the premises. You should look out for all open flames and take safety measures against fires.
