Christmas Day 2023: King Charles III and British Royal Family Celebrate Traditional Mass at Sandringham House

It was the first Christmas of Charles III (75) after his coronation. Accompanied by his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles (76), and members of the British royal family, the sovereign began the traditional mass that, like every December 25, was celebrated in the Sandringham church, in Norfolk. The event began minutes after eleven in the morning, when the Kings led the procession to the temple of Saint Mary Magdalene escorted by the princes of Wales, William (41) and Kate Middleton (41) – wearing a blue Klein jacket by Alexander McQueen and matching headdress –, with his three children, George (10), Charlotte (8) and Louis (5), and his sister, Princess Anne (73), with her husband Timothy Laurence (68) and their daughter Zara Tindall (42), among others.

Like last year, Prince Harry (39) and his wife, Meghan Markle (42), did not attend: they preferred to spend the holidays in Montecito, California with their little ones, Archie (4) and Lilibet (2).

THE BIG SURPRISE

Away from his duties in the Crown, Prince Andrew (63) was present this Christmas and he did not do it alone: he walked to the church with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson (64), who had not participated in the celebration since they had separated. (The last time she was seen at the traditional event was in 1991, alongside Lady Di). With them were their daughters, Beatriz (35) and Eugenia de York (33), and their respective husbands, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (40) and Jack Brooksbank (36).

After the ceremony, the Windsors returned to Sandringham House for lunch together and enjoyed a fabulous menu that included shrimp salad, roast turkey, sides of carrots and Brussels sprouts, and, for dessert, brandy pudding.

At the end of the meal, the royal family gathered in front of a screen – as has happened for more than ninety years – to watch the broadcast of King Charles III’s speech recorded days before at Buckingham Palace. “At a time of increasingly tragic conflicts around the world, I pray that we too can do everything in our power to protect each other… The words of Jesus seem more relevant than ever: “Treat others how you want to be treated,” the King said in his message.

A great defender of the environment, he also dedicated a few words to the preservation of the planet. “Caring for this creation is the responsibility of people of all faiths and even those who have no faith. We take care of the Earth for the good of our children’s children,” concluded the monarch.
