This year’s Christmas celebrations are over and Christmas in Rome is just around the corner. Many Christmas presents have been received and given, and for some, they may not have been large packages, but rather little gift cards under the Christmas tree this year.
Thomas Iversen is a senior adviser and consumer advocate at the Norwegian Consumer Council. He says many gift cards have an expiration date of one year. It is worth noting, he believes him.
– A year is a long time and it’s easy to forget. So you donate money to the company, Iversen tells Nettavisen.

Twelve good news from the year that is ending
According to an article NRK extension released earlier this year, there may be between two and a half and three billion kroner worth of unused gift vouchers lying around in Norwegian homes.
Iversen believes the best thing to do is make a note of when gift cards expire. If the gift card doesn’t have an expiration date, there’s one rule that mostly applies.
– Three years is the general statute of limitations, says Iversen.
Work with customer calls
If you didn’t receive a gift card, but rather other things, such as clothes, books, tools, or electronics, chances are you’ll need to exchange something you received for Christmas.
Virke is the leading organization for trade and service industry. Brother William Stende is branch manager of Virke Faghandel.
He says they don’t have figures on how many gifts they give each other at Christmas, but that toys, gold and watches, electronics, cooking and sports equipment, and books do two to three times more turnover in December than in other months.
– Clothing stores are the ones with the highest turnover after food in December with over 4 billion in turnover, and here we know that the turnover is a lot, Stende tells Nettavisen.
– NRK spoke earlier this year to an NHH professor who believed there could be up to three billion unused gift cards with Norwegian consumers. Is it desirable for shops that customers do not use cards, so that shops can save this money?
– You don’t want gift cards to sit unused. On the contrary, we invite you to follow the expiration date so that the gift is not lost, replies Stende.
Useful tips for exchanging Christmas gifts

- Go directly to the cashier or operator and tell them you want to change
- Take care of the packaging, especially when it comes to shoes
- Do not use the object!
- Don’t wait too long to contact the store.
- Items sold on sale in December are not normally traded.

– Tired of the package stuff
One of those who went to a sports shop in central Oslo on Tuesday morning to change a pair of trainers was Magnus Rees.
He liked the shoes, but preferred them in a color other than black, preferably yellow.
– I’m early, because I’m really tired of all the package stuff. Now it’s just about getting the last rest, and then I’ll go for a walk in good weather or something. I hope they have the yellow shoes I’m looking for. If not, I’ll see what to do. There will likely be a bill of exchange and some shopping in the new year, he tells Nettavisen in this video interview:

He’s not afraid to offend the gift giver by changing his shoes.
– The question is how they will react if it appears in the Nettavisen that I exchange their gift, but they will just have to put up with it. The shoes were nice, it was just the color that was a little so-so, she says.
– What are the best Christmas presents you’ve received this year?
– It was nice to be with family and friends. All those things there. It’s a bit of a classic answer, but you get most of it in the end. It’s like good health and those things that are important, I think.
