IN IMAGES, IN PICTURES – Christmas celebrations began this Sunday all over the world.
Between Jakarta (Indonesia), Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Istanbul (Turkey) or Kiev (Ukraine): in joy, prayer or contemplation, cities around the world are these December 24 and 25 the scene of celebrations of Christmas Eve as diverse as it is varied.
If in Australia, the party is in full swing and residents celebrate New Year’s Eve in swimsuits on the beach, the atmosphere lends itself more to contemplation in Bethlehem (in the West Bank), the world cradle of Christianity. In this city which, according to Christian tradition, would be the birthplace of Jesus, his statuette is placed in the middle of the rubble to remind the assembly of prayers of the civilian victims of Gaza.

Christmas celebrations are just as full of symbols in Ukraine, which is celebrating its second New Year’s Eve this year under Russian bombs. In kyiv, in the capital, passers-by walk around a tree made of pieces of shells in the streets, a glaring reminder of the war raging on Ukrainian soil. In Indonesia, the end of the Christmas mass is not immediately followed by the traditional festive meal: believers first gather in cemeteries to commemorate their ancestors.
Christmas is also an opportunity to renew customs: in the United States, the Native American tribes of New Mexico compete in colorful costumes and dances around campfires to honor their traditions.
