Will it be an idyllic and snowy Christmas, or will it be sad and grey?
There are six days left until the day when the packages must be opened. This means that the meteorologists have preliminary forecasts of what the Christmas weather will look like in large parts of the country.
When VG called the meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute, Martin Granrød, on Sunday evening, he was both optimistic and expectant.
– There is hope! If you look at the forecast today, there is still hope that there may be a white Christmas in large parts of the country, says the meteorologist and adds:
– If the forecasts hold, we will enter a week that will gradually become cooler and with precipitation.

The snow can stay
Eastern Norway could look set to have an idyllic Christmas with a blanket of white snow – if precipitation arrives as expected on Wednesday or Thursday.
When the meteorologist is asked about the probability of a white Christmas in Eastern Norway this year, he replies that there is around an 80 percent probability of precipitation, and then a 50-60 percent probability that the precipitation will remain as snow.
– If you are lucky and get snow on Wednesday or Thursday, and the minus degrees stay that day, then it is likely that this will be delayed until the Christmas weekend.
– Then it will be a white Christmas, states the meteorologist.
He specifies that the forecasts are more uncertain out on the coast and by the Oslo Fjord, than inland, such as by Innlandet county and indre Viken.

He says that Central Norway has very similar forecasts to Eastern Norway – namely that snow may appear towards the end of the week. It will then last until the Christmas weekend.
Some should seek refuge in the cabins
In outer parts of Western Norway and in Southern Norway, which includes Rogaland and Agder, temperatures will be too high. Here, the precipitation during the week will fall as rain due to excessively high temperatures.
Temperatures, on the other hand, will drop again by the Christmas weekend, but then without a layer of white snow.
Inland parts of Western Norway, on the other hand, it will probably be a white Christmas, especially at high altitudes.
– If you want to ensure a snowy Christmas, you should seek refuge in your cabins inland, says Granrød.
In Northern Norway you can be positive.
In the northern counties, which include Nordland and Troms and Finnmark, you will see the same tendency as in Eastern Norway and central Norway, where temperatures drop to minus ten degrees during the week and the snow remains.
The meteorologist warns: Slippery and a lot of wind
– We had a cold period, followed by a milder period where the snow has turned to slush. When it now gets cold again, it can become very icy on the roads and pavements. Then you have to be careful that it can get very slippery, and adds:
– Certain areas avoid this, as all the snow was melted away in the mild weather.
Are you going to drive far the week before Christmas to get home to your family and loved ones? Then meteorologist Granrød has a clear recommendation:
– On Tuesday, there will be periods of very strong winds in coastal areas and in mountain areas. Those who are going to drive far across Norway’s land should check the Norwegian Road Administration’s traffic reports and the weather forecast, he concludes.
