The President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde said on Wednesday that political leaders had managed the crisis of the new coronavirus in their respective countries better than their male counterparts. She particularly highlights the good communication of Sophie Wilmès in Belgium.
“It’s quite fascinating, actually, when you look at these countries that were ruled by women, the path they took, the policies they adopted and the style of communication that was involved was pretty amazing.“said the Frenchwoman in an online interview with the Washington Post.
“I learned that women tend to do a better job“, she added.
Christine Lagarde thus took for example German Chancellor Angela Merkel whose country, with just over 9,000 deaths, was one of the least affected in Europe and where the crisis was managed effectively.
Angela Merkel “shared data figures, victims, contamination rate, etc. in a very transparent way. and it quickly became a kind of common lingua franca allowing people to understand the scientific elements and why certain restrictive measures were necessary such as the wearing of masks, confinement and respect for social distances“she said.
And to add about Germany: “it seems to have worked well“in comparison to other European countries.
She also praised the management of the leaders of Taiwan (and its president Tsai Ing-wen), New Zealand (with its Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern) and Belgium (and its Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès), who have “well communicated“during the crisis.
“To lead is to inspire. It is about being both responsible and accountable. It is also about caring for others. I think the dimension of benevolence is something that they managed to express well“, added Ms. Lagarde.
