LONDON, Jun 14 (Reuters) – Christie’s said on Monday it will auction works of art by 18-year-old trans artist FEWOCiOUS in the form of crypto assets (NFTs) amid a flurry of non-expendable items on the market.
An NFT is a form of cryptographic asset that records ownership of a digital object such as an image, video, or text. While the item can be viewed by anyone, only the buyer of an NFT has official owner status.
FEWOCiOUS, whose real name is Victor Langlois, has five lots for sale, each representing one year of his life when he discovered his gender identity between the ages of 14 and 18.
They will be sold at Christie’s from June 23 to 30, in an online auction called “Hello, I’m Victor (FEWOCiOUS) and This Is My Life”, which coincides with LGBT + Pride month.
Each lot consists of a video artwork that exists only in digital form, sold as NFT, a set of doodles, drawings, and journal entries for the corresponding year in physical and NFT form, as well as a physical-only painting.
FEWOCiOUS, who started making art at age 13, said that digital art was a haven and escape from his conservative home where he had to hide his true self.
Its NFT sales to date have reached more than $ 18 million, said Christie’s, which sold its first NFT in 2020 for just $ 1,000.
The NFT sales funded her to move out of her childhood home in Las Vegas, she said. He now lives in Seattle.
“I’m putting my heart in there so I’m happy that someone is watching,” he said. “I hope other trans kids or adults can see this and say, wow, that’s another person who did something great.”
NFTs exploded in popularity in early 2021. An NFT sold for $ 69.3 million at a Christie auction in March, in what was a major auction house’s first sale of a non-existent artwork. in physical form.
