Christie’s had already postponed the 20th Century Week, major event of the auction season, from mid-May to the end of June.
It had also merged the New York and London weeks into a single series of sales, all scheduled in the American metropolis.
She finally set the sale for July 10, dividing it into four stages, held in Hong Kong, Paris, London and New York.
The four sales, united under the name “ONE”, will be held consecutively, starting with Hong Kong, which holds a series of sales that week.
Christie’s plans to welcome the public wherever the provisions in force allow it and in accordance with the instructions issued by the authorities, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
In the case of New York, gatherings remain prohibited.
The sale will be accessible online and collectors will be able to bid on the internet or by phone, Christie’s said in a statement released Friday.
Last season, Christie’s offered, for the first time during the big evening sales in New York, which are regularly the scene of record transactions, the possibility of bidding online, but with a ceiling.
This is a “hybrid format”, as explained by the co-chair of the Impressionism and Modern Art department at the auction house, Giovanna Bertazzoni, quoted in the press release.
“We have the feeling that this event will reflect the way our customers compose their collections today,” she added.
Among the few works unveiled by Christie’s that will be offered at this sale is Nude with Joyous Painting (1994), by American painter Roy Lichtenstein, estimated at $ 30 million and included in the New York part of the event.
A canvas from the series will also be on sale in New York The women of Algiers by Pablo Picasso, entitled Version F and estimated at around 25 million dollars.
The Version O of the series sold in May 2015 for $ 179.3 million at Christie’s.
