Freiburg (dpa) – In the DFB Cup game against SC Paderborn, Freiburg coach Christian Streich will be reunited with his former protégé Max Kruse. The offensive player played for SC Freiburg in the 2012/13 season. “It was an extremely intense and extremely successful year in which we came fifth,” SC coach Christian Streich recalled before the game on Wednesday (6 p.m./Sky). “I would have liked to have had him longer because he is a huge footballer is,” said the coach.
Kruse then found himself in completely different financial areas than the sports club could have offered him. Gladbach, Wolfsburg, Bremen, Fenerbahce Istanbul, Union Berlin and Wolfsburg again were Kruse’s other stops. Last summer, second division football team Paderborn surprisingly signed the 35-year-old former national player, who was without a club at the time, and who also repeatedly made headlines off the pitch, including through his passion for poker.
Kruse could still be “dangerous to all opponents because he has an extraordinary left foot,” warned Streich before the cup game. However, Kruse wasn’t able to show that in Paderborn as he was slowed down by a torn muscle fiber after two match days and has only had short appearances since then.
