Christian Streich Reflects on Potential End to Coaching Career with SC Freiburg

Freiburg (dpa) – Christian Streich no longer rules out an imminent end to his career as a coach. “I feel that I’m getting older. My strength is dwindling, it’s just foreseeable,” said the coach of Bundesliga soccer team SC Freiburg in an interview with “11Freunde” magazine. “I find myself thinking more and more often: How much energy is there left in the players? And when I realize that there is no longer enough and that someone younger is needed to get to the players, I stop.”

The 58-year-old has been on the Breisgauer sidelines since 2012 and has steadily developed the club further. Most recently, Freiburg qualified for the Europa League twice and reached the final of the DFB Cup once. Freiburg got off to a good start this season and are in eighth place in the table after eight match days.

Streich, who had extended his contract again in March, categorically ruled out a commitment to another, possibly financially stronger club. “It’s no longer an option for me,” he said. “Now all the energy that is still there is being invested here, and I decide with those responsible year after year whether it will continue.”

Sports director Jochen Saier calmly noted Streich’s statements about his future planning. “This season we have agreed on the same timetable as all the previous years with Christian,” he told the “Kicker” and added: “That means we will sit down together in February or March, listen to each other, clarify the energy issue, analyze the season so far and discuss the direction and plans.”
