The Christian parties ChristenUnie, SGP and CDA are suddenly afraid that Christian Sunday schools will come under the supervision of the Education Inspectors. Secretary of State Mariëlle Paul (Basic Education) is working on a law that will ensure inspectors can visit weekend schools if there are signs of abuse. This is reported by ANP.
The plans were discussed in the debate about the riot in Amsterdam last week. Prime Minister Dick Schoof said on Monday that anti-Semitism must be combated in education. His biggest concerns are about the weekend schools and he also mentioned the new law that is approaching. By this he meant Islamic education, but that distinction cannot be made legally.
And who, wait a minute, that wasn’t the intention. The director of the CU Mirjam Bikker is afraid that this makes Sunday schools suspicious. According to Bikker, the law “doesn’t just focus on the circles where things go wrong, but it really applies to everything, up to and including including Sunday schools.” She believes that the rules should only apply to Islamic education, or as she hides it: “The place where things go wrong, for example foreign finance”. According to Bikker, Sunday schools or scouting groups should be protected from additional supervision.
