The World Cup is not a sprint
Nati debuted with a 1-0 victory at the World Cup in Qatar. But the tournament has only just begun, says Christian Finkbeiner, head of Blick football.

A start has been made. Against Cameroon, Nati did their homework and lived up to their role as favourites. After a boring first half, it gets livelier, faster, better after the break. In the end, the first victory is deserved. Without shine, but also without shaking – and very important: without too much effort. Because a World Championship is not a sprint, but a progression race. Especially for top teams. And the national team wants to advance in this circle here in Qatar.
There are still two downsides. The win should have been a goal or two off. And the bookings against central defenders Elvedi and Akanji, who sees a yellow card for complaints, are already becoming a problem against Brazil. Another booking threatens the pair for what is likely their final group match against Serbia.
That’s why Nati shouldn’t get too excited about their first win in Qatar. With the record world champion, a different caliber than lowly Cameroon awaits in the second game. Other qualities are also required: it will be a defensive battle, with little ball possession. Players know this, and Murat Yakin too. The good thing is that Nati still have plenty of air after their opening win against Cameroon. Also on. And that’s where he wants to go.
