Christian Atsu survived the collapse of the resulting building Turkey earthquake. What about the other footballers?
The Turkish earthquake that hit devastated the country. Tens of thousands of fatalities are reported to have died as a result of the powerful shaking.
The majority of the fatalities resulted from the collapse of buildings due to the 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Among civilians, many footballers also became victims.
One of them is Christian Atsu, a former Chelsea and Newcastle United player. The Ghanaian player who is currently defending Hatayspor was a victim of the rubble.
Almost 24 hours Christian Atsu buried, before finally being rescued. The 31-year-old player is now receiving treatment so he can recover.
Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan experienced another fate. According to the Guardian, the goalkeeper for the Second Division club Yeni Malatyaspor died as a result of being a victim of the rubble.
Later, a Canadian football account confirmed several of its players were safe. Atiba Hutchinson, Samuel Adekugbe, Ballou Tabla, Christabel Oduro, Ali Yildiz, Hıjran Boyaci and Alhan Kurtoğlu are said to have survived the Turkey earthquake.
Meanwhile, another victim was also identified as a footballer. Nader Joukhadar, a former Syrian player who had appeared in the 1996 Asian Cup, is said to have been a victim of the Turkish earthquake.
Football correspondent from Uganda, Chepaz Tendereza, reports that there are four Ugandan players who are in Turkey. They are Farouk Miya, Sandra Nantumbwe, Owen Kasule, and Fauzia Najjemba. Two of them are reported to have survived, and the rest have not been reported.
Then, two Nigerian players David Babajide and Henry Onyeruku were reportedly also in Turkey. Onyeruku is reportedly safe, and there have been no reports of David Babajide.
Hopefully the footballers are safe, as well as other civilians.
