One of Captain America’s last scenes almost happened without Chris Evans in Endgame. Diplomatic incident avoided, but beware of spoilers!
Since Marvel turned the fates of many characters upside down with Avengers : Endgame, Phase 4 has the duty to restore some order. On this point, the series Falcon and the Winter Soldier should teach us what Captain America’s two buddies decided to do in his absence.
As a reminder, Steve Rogers took advantage of the end ofEndgame to retire, stepping back in time to live a peaceful life with her old-time sweetheart, Peggy Carter. However, the Avenger still came back to say hello to his friends after having aged well, in order to entrust his famous shield to the Falcon.
“- And there, he handed me the shield! – Yes I know I was there dude ..”
Series Falcon and the Winter Soldier should moreover deal in depth with this passing of the torch and the weight it represents. In an interview about it for The Jess Cagle Show, actor Anthony Mackie returned to the creative process around Captain’s last scene in Endgame, marked by an impressive work of prosthetics and make-up on the face of Chris Evans. Yet, according to the comedian, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have considered for a time to replace the interpreter by an older actor :
“They wanted to find an old actor to play Chris Evans. They brought back three actors, and none were going to look like Chris when he was old. He will be like George Clooney, at 95, he will still be very handsome! So they called the makeup and prosthetics team and turned him into an old man, and it worked, because Chris is a really good actor. He made it believable with his voice and everything. He did a good job. ”
In retrospect, the decision to keep Chris Evans in his role may seem obvious, if only in view of the emotion aroused by his farewell. But above all, the directors ofEndgame were aware of the stake represented by the myriad of characters on the screen, and the potential confusion brought by last minute additions, even for characters already known.
Cap or not Cap?
For example, a deleted scene from the film revealed that after his finger snaps Tony Stark got the chance to see his daughter Morgan in the future. Actress Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) took on the role in this short passage, before being gently released from the assembly bench. The lack of clarity on the identity of the young woman obviously would not have helped. And as much to say that we would have moderately liked to be dropped in the same way for the last scene of Captain America.
