Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint haven’t reprise their roles as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley for a decade now, but the director of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Chris Columbus, wants to see them together for one last adventure.
In interview at Variety, Chris Columbus said he would love to work on a film adaptation of the play L’Enfant Maudit from 2016 which sees the return of Harry Potter 19 years after the end of the saga in novels.
“I would love to make ‘The Cursed Child,’” explains C. Columbus. “It’s a great play and kids are exactly the right age to play these roles. It’s one of my little fantasies. “
D.Radcliffe, E.Watson, and R.Grint are all in their 30s now, which would give them the right age to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione onscreen for this story. The Cursed Child tells the story of the children of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, the initial characters being secondary here. The play has been a big hit across the world since its launch in England. If the script was released in French, the piece has never been imported to us, the rooms seeming cautious for the duration and the investment requested (in a period of pandemic moreover.) According to The Daily Prophet, this could change due to modifications made to the part, but nothing is gained yet.
Chris Columbus directed The Wizarding School in 2001 and the 2002 sequel, The Chamber of Secrets. He is also the producer of Prisoner of Azkaban. David Yates took over the role of director for the last four Harry Potter films, as he also directed the first two Fantastic Beasts films.
Yates is now directing The Secrets of Dumbledore, the third film in the spinoff saga, slated for release next year.
The original play was written by Jack Thorne with John Tiffany and Harry Potter creator JK Rowling, the latter having since come into conflict with fans over his transphobic remarks.
It’s unclear if a Cursed Child movie will make, but Warner Bros. is still working on a possible Harry Potter series, while the Hogwarts Legacy video game is still brewing (featuring transgender characters).
