Chosen by BBC as One of the Safest Destinations for Solo Female Travelers

The BBC reported on the 3rd (local time) that it has selected 5 countries that are safe for women to travel alone. ▲Slovenia ▲Rwanda ▲United Arab Emirates (UAE) ▲Japan ▲Norway were selected.

The BBC said the countries were selected in consideration of indicators of safety and equality for female travelers. The selection criteria referred to the Georgetown University Women’s Stability Index (WPS), the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Gender Gap Report, and the Economics and Peace Research Institute (PGP) data.

Slovenia in Eastern Europe ranked high in all overall figures in the WPS index. In particular, high security and convenient transportation were cited as reasons for selection.

In Africa, Rwanda was selected. The BBC said that the main reason for the selection was that Rwanda’s parliament is 55% female and ranks first in the world for gender equality in parliament.

The UAE in the Middle East scores highly in the WPS index for girls’ schooling and financial inclusion. In terms of community safety, it ranks highest among all countries.

In Asia, Japan was selected. The main reason was the low rate of violent crime. In addition, as one of the world’s 10 safest countries selected by the World Peace Index, women-only subways and lodging facilities were cited as the reason for the selection.

Lastly, Norway was selected in Northern Europe. Norway topped the WPS results in items such as financial inclusion of women to women, lack of legal discrimination, and community safety.
