Choquequirao Cable Car Project will be the largest PPP investment in the Tourism sector

The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) reports that the reference investment in the project “Improvement of Public Tourist Services of the Choquequirao Archaeological Park” (Choquequirao Cable Car) would amount to US$ 220 million, becoming the Public-Private Association (APP) largest in the Tourism sector.

In 21 years of creation, PROINVERSIÓN has structured and awarded various projects in the tourism sector, such as ecological recreational centers, tourist complexes and the Kuélap Cable Car System, but none of the size and complexity of the Choquequirao Cable Car project.

This large investment will generate the conditions for more than one million tourists to visit the Archaeological Park, which will mean a considerable jump compared to the 8 thousand people who currently attend per year.

The demand from new visitors will boost tourism and related activity in the southern part of the country, because it will mean greater demand for accommodation, transportation, travel agencies, restaurants, gastronomy services, a greater number of guides and local commerce; which will have a dynamic effect on direct and indirect employment for the regions of Cusco and Apurímac.

The Choquequirao Cable Car project plans to carry out various works such as the construction of tourist routes, the central stations in Cusco (Yanama) and Apurímac (Huanipaca), as well as the cable car stations, departure and arrival and intermediate stations. This will provide facilities to develop cultural, adventure and nature tourism, because currently a tourist if they want to visit Choquequirao must have five (5) days to do so.

PROINVERSIÓN PROCESS

The award of the project is scheduled for the first half of 2025. To date, PROINVERSIÓN approved the Project Promotion Plan, whose objective is to establish the conditions, characteristics and modality to promote private investment.

In this sense, it is planned to call the project under the Comprehensive Project Competition mechanism, so that the successful bidder is responsible for the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the project. The process is carried out at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), the entity that will sign the PPP Contract as the owner of the project; At the end of the contract term, the public infrastructure will pass into the hands of the State.
