Choosing Between MBR and GPT: How to Initialize and Partition Your New Hard Drive

If you are going to install a new hard drive in your computer, it must be initialized and partitioned before it can be used, whether it is an SSD or a traditional hard drive. You then get the choice between the older partition system mbr and the newer gpt.

Mbr stands for master boot record and has been around since 1983. It has its limitations, such as only supporting disks up to two terabytes and only four primary partitions.

Gpt (guid partition table) is much more modern and can handle today’s giant disks, it is only the operating system that possibly puts limits on disk size and number of partitions. Gpt is also more securely structured and has a significantly better chance of recovery in case of problems.

All Windows systems from Vista onwards can read gpt disks. However, a modern uefi bios is required to be able to start Windows from such a disk. So what should you choose?

Gpt is better and the natural choice if your computer has uefi. For an older computer with a traditional bios or for compatibility with such a computer, you must use mbr for the system disk.
