FIFA has announced the selection of Italian referee Daniele Orsato to officiate the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup between Qatar and Ecuador on Sunday. Orsato was responsible for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology at the last World Cup, and is described as “one of the most experienced referees in Europe”.

“At the age of forty-six, he is one of the most experienced referees in Europe and has been supervising matches since 2010. He was a video assistant referee at the 2018 World Cup,” FIFA said in a statement on Friday.
Qatar begins its participation in the World Cup by hosting the finals, which are also held for the first time in the Middle East, while Ecuador is in the final for the fourth time.
The two teams are drawn into a first round that includes the Netherlands, three times runners-up, and Senegal, champions of Africa, who have received a painful slap with the injury of their star, Sadio Mane, second best player in the world for 2022 and the best African player.
