Chongqing, located in Southeast China, is the largest city in the world. Its territory is the size of Austria and about 32 million people live on it. The city is really huge – there are 38 districts and municipalities. And the inhabitants of its ideal center are “relatively” few – 11 million or more than three times as many Berliners. Due to its favorable geographical location, the city is the most important economic center of Eastern China.
The city of many names
Chongqing has many names: the mountain city, the fire city, the party city. It is set on floors at the foot of the mountains and is full of stairs. Another of its names comes from them – a fitness studio under the open sky. In addition, it is also called the “motorcycle capital” – the city is hilly and there is simply no way to ride bicycles.
In China and in Asia, Chongqing has long become a magnet for tourists, reports Second German Television ZDF. The city is also famous as a popular backdrop for incredible photos – such as the subway that passes through the eighth floor of an apartment block, or the square, which is not a square, but is located 20 floors below the ground.
Imagine the amount of cars that move around the metropolis every day – that’s why the authorities are intensively building multi-storey parking lots in the city. Among them is the 22-story automatic garage with 400 spaces, which allows the car to be parked in seconds. For this purpose, it is only necessary to enter a special box and scan a QR code.
Because of the dense construction and intense traffic on the streets, playgrounds are often located on the roofs of skyscrapers. The air is cleaner there than down there, and the view is fantastic.
Many tourists from China itself come because they have seen videos of Chongqing on social networks and want to get valuable footage in turn. Previously, tourists only came to the city for a day, tour guide Yuli told ZDF. People came just to catch a glimpse of the cruise ships – because Chongqing is located on two rivers: Yangtze and Jialin, which are also of different colors.
In the center of the city, the clear waters of the Jialin River meet the brown waters of the Yangtze, forming a clear border.
The culinary advantages of Chongqing
Chongqing is also known for a specialty that is now eaten in other countries – it is the so-called Hotpot or boiling pot. The specialty is the following: in a boiling broth, everyone puts different products – meat, vegetables, fish, offal – and when they are ready, they are taken out and eaten. However, at the time, mostly offal was used for the dish, as it was cheap. Today, more and more fish, vegetables and tofu are used.
In Chongqing, this specialty is particularly hot, and the locals are particularly proud of how hot they eat it. And they get excited if foreigners dare to try something hot. but in Chongqing there are almost none – the largest city in the world is visited by very few tourists. Nightlife in Chongqing
China’s largest city can also boast of its nightlife – for the locals, two o’clock in the morning is not late at all. “People usually drink until the morning in the bars – until they close,” Shen Xiun told German reporters. He is from the so-called “clean” drivers, whose job is to drive home guests of establishments who have consumed alcohol. China has a strict ban on drinking and driving, but drivers like Shen Xun are on hand for those who want to get home.
The 23-year-old takes his clients in their own cars. He arrives at the location with the electric bicycle, which he stores in the trunk of the cars. Shen Xun works in two places, ZDF reports. During the day – in a restaurant, and for two months at night he has been a “washed up” driver. “Of course I’m tired – who would want to work two places. But to have the life I want, I have to work hard,” says the young man.
