Indian celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar explained that cholesterol cannot be equated with fat. Cholesterol is technically known as Lipoprotein, and consists of fat and protein as the name suggests.

“Cholesterol is divided into three categories, colloquially known as good, bad and very bad cholesterol,” said Rujuta Diwekar as quoted from NDTV.com, Friday (27/8/2021).

He explained that High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) is good cholesterol because it has more protein and less fat, thus protecting the heart.

Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), on the other hand, has more fat when compared to HDL. This is why LDL is called bad cholesterol. However, he asked the public now to learn that it is not as bad as imagined.

The reason is, LDL has many roles such as making your hormones, synthesizing vitamin D, having antioxidant qualities and helping create energy.

Rujuta then offended Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) which is known as very bad cholesterol because it has a low protein content.

He also talks about triglycerides, which experts say can be considered pure fat and adds that the lower the level, the better.

“For people battling unfavorable cholesterol levels, experts say the focus is on increasing HDL values ​​and reducing triglyceride and VLDL values. When the values ​​are indiscriminate, it can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes in the long term,” says Rujuta.
