TRIBUN-BALI.COM – Cholesterol is a fat molecule that can be found in some foods and is made in the liver.
In general, this cholesterol can be divided into two types, namely high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL).
HDL serves to carry cholesterol from the cells in the body to the liver.
The liver then breaks it down or removes it from the body as a waste product.
This function is useful for the body. Therefore, HDL is often referred to as “good cholesterol”.
While LDL serves to carry cholesterol from the liver to the cells. Cells actually use cholesterol, but if they get too much of it, it can build up in the arteries.
This buildup in the arteries is known to cause health problems, so doctors sometimes refer to LDL as “bad cholesterol.”
Experts measure cholesterol levels in the body in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) of blood. In general, normal or healthy cholesterol levels are recommended for people, namely:
- LDL should be less than 100 mg/dL
- HDL should be 40 mg/dL or higher
Effects of high cholesterol on the body
When you have higher-than-normal LDL levels, a person can often be called “high cholesterol.”
