Choi Gyeong-ju Reflects on Juniors’ Performance and Future Goals in Golf

“There is no player who has impressed me yet.”

Choi Gyeong-ju (53), the legend of Korean men’s golf, did his best to love his juniors at the Korea Professional Golf (KPGA) Korean Tour Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Choi Gyeong-ju Invitational (total prize money of 1.25 billion won) held at the Ferrum Club (par 72) in Yeoju-si, Gyeonggi-do from the 5th. did.

All competition fees that players had to pay were covered, and like in the U.S., meals were provided not only to the players but also to their families. In addition, about 900 abalone were airlifted from Wando, his hometown, and served as a special meal to junior players and caddies participating in the tournament.

Choi Gyeong-ju, who struggled to run the tournament for juniors, recorded 76 strokes for two days in a row, tied for 71st with an intermediate total of 8 over par 152 strokes, and missed the cut.

Choi Kyung-ju said, “It was my first difficult match in a long time, but I was happy. He felt, ‘We can set up a course like this too.’ I was happy regardless of the score. “It was as if he had competed in the US Open,” he said happily.

The Ferrum Club course, where the Choi Gyeongju Invitational is held, is famous for being difficult. The narrow fairway and deep rough put pressure on players, and the greens are also fast. The green speed reached 3.5m.

Choi Gyeong-ju said, “It is not an easy course even if the score is good,” and despite this, regarding the winning score of 20 under par or higher on the PGA Tour, “It is because the players use iron shots accurately. “He has the ability to take the ball out of the long rough and land it on the green,” he explained.

He did not spare any advice to his juniors. He said, “You can’t win the PGA Tour Invitational course if you don’t hit iron shots well. “You can’t get good grades on a course where you have to hit a 9-iron and hit a 5- or 6-iron to hit the ball on a hard green,” he pointed out.

He continued, “To be successful on the world stage, you have to have a good iron shot. Looking at our current players, their driver shot distance is enormous, but their iron shot ability seems to be lacking. There is no player yet who has exclaimed, ‘This guy has a killer iron shot.’ This is why you cannot win against overseas players. “If you have good iron shots, you can putt well,” he pointed out.

Choi Kyung-ju, who is still an active player, said, “I plan to play more on the PGA Tour next year. With the season ending in November, he will focus on improving his flexibility and preparation for next season. If he’s not going to retire, he wants to do better. Although my performance is not what it used to be, I want to find the picture I want. “I want to finish my career as a player on a good note,” he pledged.
