Chocomel gives a boost: ‘But unwise in the long term’

According to sports nutrition expert Henk-Jan Koershuis, the drink is not seen by many people as something unhealthy, while it is. “One glass of chocomel contains all your daily amount of sugar. That says enough. Drinking chocomel is a very unhealthy choice”, he tells EditieNL.

There are seven sugar cubes in one can. More than in an ice tea, which contains six. Chocomel, along with Red Bull and Fanta, is one of the unhealthier drinks.

Boost

Yet both athletes and our Prime Minister reach for the chocolate before or after an effort. According to Koershuis, that is not surprising. “After drinking a can, you can go forward an hour and a half. For the press conference it is a boost and runners use it as fuel, for example, or to recover.”

As an athlete, Jesse Linthorst is not averse to a chocolate pellet. The survival runner drinks it four times a week, after every workout. They take about an hour and a half for him. “I enjoy it very much. I drink chocolate milk for recovery.”

According to Linthorst, the drink is not only unhealthy. “It also contains good products, such as sugars and proteins. And you need those substances after a hard workout.” So he just keeps going with it for the time being.

Corona

Nevertheless, Koershuis does not recommend excessive drinking of chocolate milk, especially during the corona crisis. “It is important in these times to improve your immune system. For that you have to reduce your sugar intake. You don’t do that by drinking chocolate milk.”
