Chocobo GP, the racing title developed by Square Enix, has recently undergone some significant changes. At the end of last year, Square Enix announced that the game would no longer receive large-scale updates and that the paid currency Mythril would be discontinued in January 2023. However, a recent update to the eShop listing in the US has raised some eyebrows.
The eShop listing now displays a “release date” of June 15, 2023, which has already passed. This update seems to be connected to the delisting of Chocobo GP “Lite,” the free version of the game. Users who had been playing the Lite version are now prompted to upgrade to the full game for $49.99 / £39.99, and their save data will be carried over.
But that’s not all. In a surprising move, Square Enix has also made all of the existing paid content in the game available for unlock using in-game currency. Previously, players had to spend real money to unlock additional content through the Mythril Shop. However, the Mythril Shop has now been completely removed, and players can unlock characters, items, and other unlocks using Tickets and Gil coins.
Nintendo Life, a popular gaming website, revisited the game and confirmed that characters like Cloud Strife can now be unlocked with just 50 Tickets, eliminating the need to purchase a Season Pass or spend real money. Other characters, items, and unlocks can also be obtained using Tickets and Gil, which can be earned by clearing missions and leveling up across multiple modes in Chocobo GP.
This move by Square Enix has been met with mixed reactions from players. While some appreciate the removal of the paid currency and the ability to unlock content without spending real money, others are concerned about the impact this may have on the game’s economy and balance.
