Chloe Zhao’s Oscars Restrained and Censored in China

Chloe Zhao went down in history as the first Asian woman and only the second woman to win an Oscar for Best Director, but her achievement was not covered by television in her native China, the Associated Press and Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

Chinese media regulators decided in April not to broadcast the Oscar ceremony on streaming platforms. Zhao was criticized in her homeland for commenting on the political system in which she allegedly insulted China on social media. Some have even raised the question of whether she can be called Chinese.

In Hong Kong, the Oscars were not broadcast live on television for the first time in 50 years for commercial reasons.

In Shanghai, access to the live show was blocked for almost two hours.

However, news of the Chloe Zhao Awards spread on the Internet. Many endorsed her thank-you speech with a quote from a poem written in the 13th century that she studied as a child, as did many other Chinese women – “people are good by birth.”
