Chloe Zhao, awarded the Golden Globe, caused discontent in China

Director Chloe Zhao, the first Asian woman to be awarded a Golden Globe for her film Land of Nomads, has sparked public outrage in China, which could threaten the release of the award-winning production in her homeland, BTA quoted AFP as saying. .

“Land of Nomads” won two awards at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony on February 28 – for best film – drama and for best director (Zhao), the agency recalls.

Thirty-eight-year-old Chloe Zhao was born in Beijing but lives in the United States. Apart from being the first Asian to be awarded the Golden Globe for directing, she is only the second woman to receive an award in the directing category after Barbra Streisand in 1984.

The award aroused admiration in Zhao’s homeland earlier this week, with the country’s media spreading glamorous articles about the “Chinese director” describing her as “pride”.

However, comments attributed to Chloe Zhao later surfaced in a 2013 American magazine in which she appeared to be criticizing her homeland.

In a supposed screenshot of the article, the director says that China is “a place where there are lies everywhere.” In another interview, which also circulates on social media, Chloe Zhao said that the United States is now her country.

These alleged words of the director do not appear on the websites of the media in question. However, they caused discontent in China, where Zhao is now called a “traitor” by some Internet users amid heightened nationalism.

Meanwhile, the hashtag “Land of Nomads” could not be found on the social network Weibo, but discussions about the film and its creator did not seem to be censored.

The release of “Land of Nomads” in China is officially scheduled for April 23. However, the date no longer appears on major film platforms in the country and the release of the film now seems uncertain, Variety reported on Friday.
