Chivas and Club America urge fans to wear white to protest violence at matches – Reuters

In the aftermath of last week’s violence in Liga MX, Chivas and Club America joined forces to stage a Classic Without Colors (Clasico Sans Couleurs) in this weekend’s matches for their men’s and women’s teams.

The idea of rivalry between the two parties, generally known as Clasico National, is intended for fans “to chase fear and violence from our pitches, by attending both games dressed in white”.

The teams’ campaign follows shocking scenes of fan brutality during the March 5 match between Querétaro and Atlas. According to local authorities, 26 people were injured in the altercations which led to 14 arrests. After the incidents, new security protocols were defined in an emergency meeting on Tuesday with Liga MX president Mikel Arriola, Mexican Football Federation (FMF) president Yon de Luisa and club owners. of the Liga MX.

Groups of supporters will no longer be allowed to travel to away games, meaning Club America ‘barras’ will not be present for Saturday’s game. Although fan groups are still permitted for home teams, Chivas announced earlier this week that such groups will not have a place at the Estadio Akron, until further notice.

According to the Guadalajara club, “the areas usually designated for these groups will be occupied by children invited through the Jorge Vergara Foundation and the Teleton Foundation”.

ESPN MX’s Cesar Caballero also reports that Chivas and Club America will hold joint press conferences on Friday, ahead of their weekend rivalry matches in Liga MX and Liga MX Femenil.

Tuesday’s meeting between Liga MX and FMF officials also laid out sanctions for Queretaro, whose fans were involved in the violent scenes over the past week. As part of their sanctions, ownership of Queretaro was returned to the previous administration under Grupo Caliente. Grupo Caliente has until the end of the year to sell Queretaro, and if they cannot do so, the team will become Liga MX property.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Club America legend and current governor of Morelos, mentioned in a recent interview that he would like to bring the Queretaro franchise from Liga MX to Zacatepec. Blanco said he will “try to contact the owner” about the team currently up for sale.
