Narita, who has only run a few points races so far, managed to secure the lead by scoring 10 points in the end.

Comment from Mitsushi Narita
The point race is about 3 or 4 times. There were many things I didn’t understand, so I thought I’d take the plunge. I had slipped out of the way, but I still didn’t think I could go there. I wasn’t told about the point difference by others, but I mostly calculated it myself and decided who to mark. Next year I want to compete in the world championships on road, track, MTB and cyclo. In particular, I want to focus on MTB and road. My goal is to qualify for next year’s world championships after being designated as a stronger road rider, and to finish within the top 30 in next year’s world championships for MTB. In the future, I want to go to the Tour de France.

In the 12km women’s race, Misaki Okamoto (Kita Kuwata) and Ayana Mizutani (Matsuyama Gakuin) competed in the road race on the first day. Mizutani overtook Okamoto, who led from the beginning of the race, and ended up with a 4-point lead.

I was always losing to Mizutani-san because I didn’t know how to compete, so I’m happy to finally win the Inter-High. I knew he was behind on points, so I figured the final double (10 points for the finish) would win him. I thought that the final position would determine whether I won or lost, and it worked.

In the 1km time trial, Shotaro Yamashita (Uchinada), who was the only one with a time in the 1 minute 5 seconds range, won the championship while there were many times in the 1 minute 6 seconds to 7 seconds range.
Comment from Shotaro Yamashita
It’s an event I’ve been doing since my first year, and last year I was 8th at the Inter-High, so this year I came every day with the intention of taking 1st place. I was naive to think that I could win because last year’s 3rd year students were gone, but since I was second in the selection in March, I was determined to win this time.My best time is in the 4s range, and I’ve become able to consistently hit the 5s range, but I can’t compete in the 5s range at university, so I’d like to improve even further and reach the top in college.

In the women’s 2km final, which was a match between Misaki Okamoto (Kita Kuwata) and Ayana Mizutani (Matsuyama Gakuin), Okamoto extended her lead in the final stage to decide the match, and together with the point race, she achieved the double crown of this tournament.

Comment from Misaki Okamoto
I felt like I was running too hard in the first half and late in the second half, so I ran as usual without being conscious of it. It was easier to pick up speed with less wind than yesterday. I had a lot of anxiety after losing to Mizutani in the road race, but I think I was able to show my strengths on the track. The world championships are coming up this month, so I want to do my best to win a medal.

Kazuma Miura (Shonan Institute of Technology) and Takeo Kobayashi (Gakuho Ishikawa) faced off in the men’s 3km final, with Kobayashi taking the lead in the first half. In the second half, the gap began to shrink, and we ran while watching the position of the opponent running on the opposite side. Kobayashi was still slightly in the lead at the beginning of the final lap, but by the finish Miura had reversed the lead. The difference was just 0.08 seconds.

Kazuma Miura comment
Following the selection and the All Japan Championship, I am happy to win the Inter-High in this event. Mr. Kobayashi was running in the first half even in the qualifying, so I tried to run the same way as in the qualifying so as not to be confused by that, but I was impatient because my time did not improve as much as I expected. He switched to pushing in the second half, but his times were dropping in the last two laps, so he stepped on it with the intention of using all his power. He’s good at it, but I want him to be good at competitive sports and other sports. I want to be able to win national championships in both road and track, and become a world-class player.

A 4km speed race where victory is achieved by passing the control line on the home straight and back straight in the lead = completing the lead responsibility. The 10 runners who won the qualifying and semi-finals entered the final, and immediately after the start they moved vigorously to take responsibility for the lead. In the deadlocked race, Kento Kanai (Matsuyama Gakuin) broke out at the end and won the championship.

Comment from Kento Kanai
It was a fast pace from the beginning, and I went to pick it up from the beginning, but it was pretty tough. I managed to get out of it in the end. In the final, my strategy was to take the back and get out when I took the home, but I could only get out for a short time and there were many scenes where I was impatient because other players came out. Next is the World Championships, so I want to do my best to compete on the world stage as a representative of Japan and stand on the top of the podium.

Comment from Kenshin Uemoto
I was thinking of running away from the 2km strike, so I was able to develop as I wanted. At the beginning he was trying to save his stamina, so he kept his composure in the race. Once he got out, he held back and ran forward without thinking about what was behind him. High school students’ scratches are easy to get into check, so it was best to run away because I was in the last sprint.

In the 1st-2nd place play-off, Sota Sugiura (Chitose High School), who advanced from the 2nd place in the preliminary round, played against Tenou Kaneda (Gakuho Ishikawa), who advanced from the 4th place in the preliminary round. In both the 1st and 2nd rounds, Esa Sakaki took the lead with timing, but Sugiura rolled up and arrived first, deciding to win the locally held Inter-High.

Comment from Sota Sugiura
Sakaki Eda-kun, who I met in the final, was facing me in the selection in March, but I was thinking that it would be a rollover because I was aggressively ahead. She was conscious not to get caught when she was running in front, and she was conscious that she would roll in the shortest distance. She consciously made 2-3 body lengths for the first run, and she stepped on after passing the 3rd corner. In the second run, Esa Sakaki didn’t have much speed, and her back was a tailwind, so she went to roll up early. It’s rare to be able to run in a national competition in front of the people who usually take care of me and the locals, so I’m really happy that I was able to win there. The support gave me strength.

Keirin was held as the final event of the Inter-High. In the men’s event, the final consisted of 6 people who won from 8 groups of preliminary rounds. Immediately after leaving the pacer, Shunta Kawakami (Matsuyama Gakuin) entered the final lap in the lead and continued to lead, but Yushun Kimura (Omiya Kou), who came up from the back outside the field, held off until the final corner, leaving behind 2nd place and below by a wide margin. and won the championship.

Comment from Yushun Kimura
I thought that if I kept calm, I could make it to the first place with my own legs, so I went all out. I think almost everyone was wary of me in the final, so I thought I was going to do it. Last year’s Inter-High was 4th, but this is the second win after winning the selection in March. I’m aiming to be a bicycle racer, so I want to do my best in the exam I’m taking this year.

The women’s finals are 6 people who won 4 sets of preliminary rounds. The game was a steering wheel toss between Maria Kitaoka (Uchinada) and Enon Murotani (Aomori Sho), who had preceded it, and Murotani came first with a narrow margin and won the first Inter-High.

Comment from Enon Murotani
Since I was in the middle of the group, I thought I wouldn’t be able to get out, but Maria-san created a gap, and I thought I could get in there, so I thought I’d be the last one. I knew that I was the first to arrive, but I was worried about whether I had been able to keep my line due to crashes, and I thought I might be relegated, so I wasn’t happy even if I finished the race. I was happy to find out that I had finally won when the order of finish was announced. This is the second time I ran with Maria. At the time of the All Japan sprint, I fell and couldn’t compete, so I’m happy to win against Maria, who I admire. She was very happy when she said “Congratulations”.
Matsuyama Gakuin wins 6th overall title
Inter-High Cycling Competition Overall Results Award Ceremony Photo: Satoru Kato Overall Winner Matsuyama Gakuin Photo: Satoru Kato
After four days of Inter-High, Matsuyama Gakuin won the overall championship for the sixth time following last year. Points are added by occupying a corner of the podium in each event, starting with the victory in the team sprint. All but Team Pursuit and Scratch were in the winning range, and they were 14 points behind Gakuho Ishikawa, who was ranked 2nd overall. The top schools have changed significantly from last year, but Matsuyama Gakuin’s stronghold has not collapsed this year. In a high school club activity that can be greatly depressed if it is replaced, it is amazing to maintain the first place so far. Will Matsuyama Gakuin’s attack continue next year?
Next year’s Inter-High will be held at the Kitakyushu Media Dome for track events and at Autopolis in Oita Prefecture for road events.
