Chiptuning: What scams are the most common?

More editing options

This has been around for a while now, but you can find something like “Maximum”, “Standard” and “Economy” on a lot of mods. Don’t believe it too much, it’s more or less rubbish, because already just by increasing the torque and adjusting the parameters of its course, consumption will be reduced. If the driver drives on the chip like before it, the modification for higher performance will result in lower consumption. By offering more options for modifying the company’s control unit software they are just hunting customers, who have deep pockets. Professional chiptuning is one.

Cylindrical testing rooms

This is a topic in itself, because during the test on the cylinders, a lot of things can be messed up and cheated. You can do it quite well manipulate intake air temperature, where it is true that the colder the better and the higher performance can be achieved with a warmed-up engine. But a fiddle with passive resistors has a greater effect. The point is that after the torque/power measurement, when the clutch is depressed, i all resistances. This means the friction between the tires and the cylinders, all the mechanical resistance of the bearings and the like. In short, the sum of all driving resistances, with the exception of air resistance of course. During this measurement, it is enough to press the brake pedal lightly, which will of course increase the resistance. The resulting torque is calculated by the computer by adding the resistances and the previously measured torque. And if we help those resistances a bit, we will of course get a higher value than what is real. Some chiptuners who are equipped with a cylinder test can thus convince the customer that they have increased the performance without it being true.

Better parameters than the manufacturer states

Not much is known about it, but generally speaking most of today’s engines have better parameters than what the car manufacturers state. Chiptuners are often guilty of this. They will perform a kind of software modification, while just starting some nice animation on the laptop screen. The engine will declare once the modification is complete for more powerful. The customer often doesn’t feel any difference and when he looks for a problem, he refers it to the adjuster for a cylinder test, suspecting that the chiptuning that took place is a fraud. In the test room, they will subsequently measure a 15% increase in power and torque. The problem is that, in particular, cars from the VW concern already have such parameters from the factory, even a fifth better than what is stated in the technical certificate.
