What does the European Commission think?
Aida Brands, Brussels editor: “Whether the European Commission will receive Intel’s plans with open arms remains to be seen. Europe wants to become less dependent on America, China and South Korea. Intel is an American player.”
This does not necessarily mean that all chips that will be made in Europe should be destined only for the European market. “The EU’s position would improve a lot if it started playing a bigger role in global chip production at all. If other countries become more dependent on Europe, it will give the EU a better negotiating position.”
