Chip Crisis, Xiaomi No Longer Dominate the Indonesian Mobile Phone Market

Suara.com – Xiaomi admitting the chip crisis that hit the world today made him no longer the ruler Indonesian mobile market. In the third quarter of 2021, Xiaomi occupies the 4th position in smartphone shipments in Indonesia.

“Chipset shortage seems to have an effect on other brands, but specifically for Xiaomi Indonesia, you could say it feels tougher,” he said Alvin Tse as Country Director of Xiaomi Indonesia, when met in Jakarta, Friday (17/12/2021).

Due to the chipset crisis, Xiaomi Indonesia also decided to increase the price of Rp. 100,000 for a number of smartphones such as Redmi 9A, Redmi 9C, Poco M3 Pro 5G, and Redmi Note 10 5G.

Alvin said there were several reasons that influenced this. First, Xiaomi was in the 1st position in Indonesia in the second quarter (Q2) 2021. As a result, the stock of cellphones runs out faster as demand increases.

“This is like roller coaster, rose high in the beginning then fell in the next quarter,” added Alvin.

The second reason, Alvin claims that Xiaomi is a Chinese company which is one of the largest in the world. He said, Xiaomi has a market share in 118 countries in the world.

“While other brands from China may only have 30 markets,” Alvin continued.

With a larger market, Xiaomi must also provide the same components. As a result, the chip crisis also had an impact in Indonesia.

Furthermore, Alvin predicts this chip crisis will continue in the next few months.
