Chip Crisis Is Expected To Continue Until Next Year

TSMC, a Taiwanese chipmaker that partners with Apple, Qualcomm, AMD and other technology companies, warned that a global scarcity of chips could continue until 2022.

“We see that demand continues to be high,” said TSMC CEO CC Wei as quoted by The Verge, Friday (16/4/2021).

“In 2023, I hope we can offer more capacity to support our customers. By then, we will start to see the tight supply chain loosening up a bit,” he added.

Wei’s comment is in line with the prediction of Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger some time ago, who said that the chip shortage will take years to resolve.

Nvidia CFO Colette Kress also recently said the graphics card maker estimates demand will continue to beat availability for this year.

The impact of global chip scarcity is being felt by many industries, from mobile phones to gaming to automotive. Many gamers still have trouble getting their ideal graphics card, PS5 and Xbox, while car manufacturers have to limit production.

At least TSMC has good news for its automotive industry counterparts as chip supply is expected to improve in the next quarter. But comments from TSMC, Intel and Nvidia indicate this crisis is not going to abate any time soon.

Currently TSMC’s manufacturing plants are running more than 100%, but in the medium term they will increase investment in new production and facilities.

“We have acquired land and equipment, and started construction of new facilities. We employ thousands of employees and are expanding our capacity in many locations,” Wei said.

TSMC plans to disburse USD 30 billion to expand its production capacity this year. In total, they will spend USD 100 billion to increase capacity at their factories over the next three years.
