Chinook Helicopters Dump Boulders on Dam in Maastricht, Prohibiting Sailing on the Maas – Latest Update

Jan 7, 2024 at 5:36 PM Update: 19 minutes ago

The two Defense Chinook helicopters have finished dumping large quantities of heavy boulders on a damaged dam in Maastricht. On Saturday and Sunday the helicopters brought large quantities of stones and partially closed a hole in the dam.

A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) said on Sunday that “the stones are in place and the hole has become much less deep”. Less water can now flow away and, according to RWS, this will help with the final recovery later.

The dam was seriously damaged on Wednesday by the strong current that arose after prolonged rain and the high water level of the Maas. Two-thirds of the dam was swept away by the flowing water.

This caused one of the more than thirty houseboats moored behind the dam to drift and collide with a bridge over the Stuwweg. The bridge has been on the verge of collapse ever since. Now the supply of fast-flowing water must first be stopped. Consideration will then be given to the construction of an emergency bridge.

Sailing on the Maas near Maastricht is prohibited due to work on an emergency dam

There is a sailing ban on the Maas near Maastricht between Limmel and Ternraai until at least Tuesday evening. According to RWS, this sailing ban is necessary due to the strong current and the work traffic on the water.

This work traffic carries equipment across the Maas that is used in the construction of the emergency dam in Maastricht.
