A community of 35,000 people is organizing to fulfill the 14 days of isolation for those who have recently returned from China.
The League of Chinese in Portugal has been asking, since the beginning of the month, the Chinese who return from China to be isolated, as a precaution, in a kind of quarantine. The news is advanced by TSF.
The operation takes place informally in the community support centers – there will be about 35 thousand Chinese people currently living in our country – are being organized by immigrant associations in direct connection with the Chinese government.
Several houses have already been found, especially in the Lisbon area, located in properties purchased through gold visas, with conditions for the Chinese who have returned from their mother country to fulfill the 14 days of isolation, a time considered necessary for the detection of the Coronavirus.
Large houses available
The president of the League of Chinese in Portugal, Y Ping Chow, explained to TSF that, so far, they have been able to borrow several large houses with a capacity for about fifty people. They are, precisely, houses that were empty and were purchased under the investment program with tax benefits for foreigners with this type of special residence permit.
Y Ping Chow says that the houses that are already being used are full, but that more and more Chinese are arriving in Portugal, returning from the Chinese New Year celebrations.
That person reveals, however, the immediate need to find a property in Coimbra that receives Chinese students who are now starting the second semester of classes at the university.
The League reports to TSF that it has “enough” offers in the portfolio of owners with a gold visa, the community simply buying beds or some basic furniture. Y Ping Chow adds that, in the cases he knows, all Chinese people voluntarily accept to participate in the quarantine.
Solidary logistics
The way to comply with the 14-day quarantine involves some logistical complexity, due to the need for isolation. In the Lisbon area, for example, food is being taken by compatriots from nearby restaurants who leave three meals a day outside their homes. Then, “in addition to meals, you need to wash your clothes” and there are also laundries owned by Chinese people who help with logistics.
Worldwide, 1486 infected people have died since the outbreak began. There are still 64,435 people infected globally under direct surveillance.
