Chinese Victory in Maldives: Mohamed Muisu Becomes President

Malé ∙ Capital Mayor and opposition leader Mohamed Muisu has been promoted as the President of Maldives. Muisu, who has openly claimed to be pro-China, defeated incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in Saturday’s second round of voting with 54% of the vote. The swearing in is on November 17.

A leader loyal to China coming to power in the strategic islands of the Indian Ocean could be a new challenge for India. The current President Solih is notable for his policies that favor India over China. Congratulating Muisu, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there will be efforts from India’s side to make the India-Maldives relationship stronger over time.

Solih, the leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), received 46% of the vote in the election with 85% voter turnout. Solih suffered a setback when former President Muhammad Nasheed left the MDP and stopped his own candidate. Mohamed Muisu (45) is the leader of the Maldives Progressive Party (PPM). Studied in Britain. Later he became a civil engineer. He entered politics as a disciple of PPM’s senior leader and former president Abdullah Yameen.
