China’s unmanned lunar probe, Changeo 5, returned to Earth with a sample of the lunar surface at dawn on the 17th (local time).

China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency quoted the National Space Agency of China that the return capsule of Changeo 5 landed in the grasslands of the Neimenggu Autonomous Region at 1:59 am Beijing time.

This is the first time China has taken samples of the moon. It is also the first moon sample obtained worldwide since the Soviet’Luna 24′ robot exploration in 1976.

Changeo 5 left Earth on the 24th of last month by carrying rocket Changjeong 5, and on the 1st of this month, a part separated from the hull landed in an area known as the lunar’sea of ​​storm’. In addition, 2 kilograms of soil and rock samples were collected by drilling a 2m deep hole as well as the surface of the moon, and then stored in a sealed container.

After taking the lunar sample, the Changeo 5 take-off ship flew again on the 3rd, and successfully combined with the orbital ship and airship in the lunar orbit on the 6th.

Xinhua News Agency evaluated that “the successful conclusion of the three-stage lunar exploration plan started in 2004, including orbiting, landing, and sampling.”

The Associated Press also said that this is the third time that China has landed on the moon, but it is the first time it has taken off from the moon again. “This success is the latest breakthrough in China’s ambitious space program.”
