Chinese Theater and Promoter Fined Over Altered Patriotic Song in Comedian Guo Degang Show

Authorities fined two companies and stated that one of China’s most prominent traditional xiangsheng comedians caused a negative impact on society after an audience member reported him for altering the lyrics of a patriotic song during a commercial performance. According to the Culture and Tourism Bureau in Wuhan city, the comedian Guo Degang distorted the revolutionary track, triggering a regulatory crackdown that underscores the strict commercial performance rules governing entertainment in the region.

The Regulatory Framework and the Wuhan Investigation

The controversy centers on a performance in Wuhan where Guo modified lines from Playing My Beloved Pipa, a well-known song from the 1950s film Railway Guerrilla. The movie depicts Communist-led guerrillas fighting Japanese forces during World War II. State media reported that Guo used mocking words at the end of the song, crossing a line that local regulators deem inviolable. Revolutionary songs carry the historical memory of the Chinese nation’s War of Resistance, and authorities emphasized in a public statement that no organization or person is permitted to distort them.

While Wuhan authorities had approved Guo’s performance in advance, the unapproved lyric change violated commercial performance regulations. In response, the Culture and Tourism Bureau fined both the theater hosting the event and the company promoting Guo. Regulators also stated they would deal seriously with relevant personnel, though specific additional punishments remain unspecified.

Commercial Fallout and Troupe Silence

Guo Degang, the founder of Deyunshe, a comedy group, and tours extensively across the country. Following the incident, multiple shows on his tour were canceled. Guo has not performed in public since the investigation began in August, and his troupe’s social media page has ceased updating. Guo did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the penalties.

Historical Precedent in Patriotic IP Enforcement

The enforcement action highlights the rigid legal boundaries surrounding intellectual property tied to state history and revolutionary culture in China. Commercial entities booking legacy acts must navigate stringent compliance standards where minor deviations in performance content can trigger severe administrative penalties. As cultural bureaus tighten oversight on live entertainment, venues and booking agencies face heightened scrutiny over every element of a show, from approved scripts to spontaneous stage banter.
