Chinese Tennis Player Zhang Shuai Withdraws from WTA Match Due to Panic Attack

Chinese Zhang Shuai refused to continue the fight in the first round match of the WTA-250 clay tennis tournament in Budapest (Hungary) due to a panic attack, RIA Novosti Sport reports today, July 19.

The duel of Zhang Shuai, who was seeded under the second number, against the Hungarian Amarissa Kiara Toth ended in the first set with a score of 6:5 in favor of the Chinese opponent.

With the score 5:5, the linesman recorded the ball hitting out, although the video replay indicated that this decision was controversial. Zhang Shuai tried to protest him, but the judge on the tower sided with the linesman. Later, the rival of the Chinese woman erased the trace of the ball on the ground.

To the applause of the stands who supported her compatriot, the Chinese tennis player took a medical break and complained of a panic attack, after which she burst into tears and refused to continue the fight.

Zhang Shuai, 34, is ranked 45th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
