Chinese Student Suffers from Delusional Love Disorder in Jiangsu Province: Symptoms, Treatment, and Warnings

Jakarta

Recently there was a stir on social media about the story of a Chinese student who suffered from delusional love disorder.

This condition made the second year student in Jiangsu province, east China, surnamed Liu (20) think that all his female school friends liked him.

Liu initially experienced symptoms in February, and her condition worsened until she became very active about the attraction she felt all the time. He even started showing inappropriate and excessive affection towards his female friends.

“All the girls at school like me,” Liu told Lu Zhenjiao, a doctor from Huai’an No. 3 People’s Hospital.

“He thinks that he is the most handsome guy in university,” Lu told Litchi News, quoted by the South China Morning Post.

Even though he received negative responses from all the female friends he approached, Liu took this as a signal that they were just too shy to accept his love.

“He has brought a lot of trouble to many of his school friends,” said Dr Lu.

Apart from making him confident in matters of love, this delusional disorder also triggered a number of changes in Liu. The 20-year-old man reportedly experienced changes in behavior, such as staying up all night, not focusing in class, and spending money carelessly.

Because his condition was getting worse, Liu finally received treatment at the hospital after being diagnosed with love delusion disorder.

Doctor Lu said the symptoms of love delusional disorder often worsen in the spring months of March and April when flowers bloom.

During this period the weather changes, causing fluctuations in endocrine levels in a person’s body. People who have experienced this condition will become hyper and sleep less.

Luckily Liu realized and was determined to recover. Doctors say that when the disease attacks, patients may show hyperexcitability, talk a lot and even experience sexual addiction. Liu himself is currently still recovering with psychotherapy and drug treatment.

“In more extreme cases, patients can become angry and attack others,” added Dr Lu.

If someone suffers from this condition, Dr Lu urges them to seek medical help immediately to prevent worsening of the condition which could disrupt a person’s quality of life.
