Chinese state media show new images of tennis star Peng Shuai

New images have been posted online of Peng Shuai, the Chinese tennis star who has not appeared in public for weeks after she accused former Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Gaoli of sexual abuse. In videos shared on Twitter by employees of state media, Peng can be seen at a tennis tournament in Beijing. A video had already been shared last night in which she was seen with others in a restaurant.

In the videos, Peng does not say anything about how she is doing or under what circumstances they were shot. In one of the videos of the tennis tournament is she introduced through the speaker; on the other she signs balls and poses with youth players.

The images were distributed by, among others, Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the state newspaper Global Times, and someone from state television. She already shared photos yesterday who have to prove that Peng is doing well.

Threat WTA

Peng’s fortunes have not been clear since she made her allegations at the beginning of November on Weibo, the Chinese variant of Twitter. The message in question was removed and Peng disappeared from public view. There is nothing about the case or about Peng in the heavily censored Chinese media.

Women’s Tennis Federation WTA said Friday consider not playing any more tournaments in China until Peng’s situation is clear. WTA chairman Simon said in response to the video from the restaurant that the images are not enough proof that Peng is safe and free.
