[Financial Channel/Comprehensive Report]The U.S. government wants to curb China’s chip industry and tightened the ban on Chinese chip exports twice in a row in the second half of last year; now it is reported that Chinese start-ups claim to launch microchips that are only available to a few Western companies. Design software. “Reuters” pointed out that this will show that it is not easy for the United States to restrict China’s chip industry.

The production of advanced chips is one of the most intense areas of competition between the United States and China as they compete for economic and military hegemony. Washington is trying to limit China’s access to sensitive microchip design tools.

The report pointed out that this popular and highly specialized software tool called “Optical Proximity Correction” (OPC) is mainly used in many microchip designs and is also a key tool in advanced chip design. These tools help design chips that advance strategic new technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and hypersonic flight.

In the past, in terms of OPC software tools, “Siemens Digital Industrial Software Company” (Siemens EDA) enjoyed a dominant position in the Chinese market. However, as 3 to 4 Chinese employees of Siemens Digital Industrial Software joined Huaxincheng, they brought technology with them. , and now the Chinese startup company “Huaxincheng” has also announced that it will launch a Chinese version of OPC in 2024 to “break through foreign monopoly” and help China become independent in chip technology. This move also attracted the attention of China’s semiconductor industry, and the investment department of “SMIC” also invested in “Huaxincheng”.

Jan-Peter Kleinhans, director of the technology and geopolitics department of the German think tank “New Responsibility Foundation” (SNV), believes that it will be difficult to develop OPC from scratch without any existing intellectual property rights. “

However, the example of “Huaxincheng” illustrates the challenges that Western countries will face in hindering the development of China’s advanced microchip technology.
