Chinese Special Envoy Zhai Jun Expresses Concerns over Gaza Conflict and Calls for Immediate Action

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Chinese looking at the situation in Gaza “very serious” about the increasing risk of large-scale ground offensive conflict and the spread of armed conflict along the borders of neighboring countries in the Middle East. This was stated by China’s special envoy for the Middle East Zhai Jun on Monday 23 October 2023.

Zhai Jun, who is visiting the Middle East, said the impact of widespread conflict in the region as well as internationally, along with the spread of armed conflict along the Israel-Lebanon and Israel-Syria borders, “makes the future prospects worrying”.

Zhai called on the international community to be “extremely alert in this regard” and take immediate action urging relevant parties to strictly comply with international humanitarian law and avoid a serious humanitarian disaster while making “joint efforts to control the situation”.

Zhai also said China is willing to do “whatever is conducive” to promoting dialogue, reaching a ceasefire and restoring peace, as well as pushing for a two-state solution and a just and lasting resolution of conflicts, according to China Central Television.

Last week, Zhai emphasized that the cause of the Israel-Gaza crisis was the lack of guarantees for the rights of Palestinians. This was said when he met with the Russian foreign minister in Qatar, who acted as an intermediary in the conflict.

Zhai said China will continue to maintain close communication with the international community, including Arab countries and will next visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other countries in the region to further strengthen coordination aimed at ending the crisis.

Before his trip to a number of countries, Zhai held telephone calls with the heads of the foreign ministries of Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Norway, as well as with special representatives at the UN and the European Union.

China has provided and will continue to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians through the UN and bilateral channels to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis, Zhai said.
