Chinese ‘Rover’ reveals the mysteries of the underground of the moon’s hidden face

Its radar has provided a stratigraphic analysis of up to a depth of 40 meters.

The Chinese lunar rover Yutu-2, carried by the Chang’e-4 probe, it has helped reveal the secrets that were kept under the surface of the hidden side of the Earth’s natural satellite, about 40 meters deep, shedding light on the geological evolution of the Moon, inform Xinhua

The vehicle used the Moon Penetrating Radar (RPL) to scan the depths of the Von Kármán crater, located in the southern hemisphere of the dark side.

Researchers at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (OAN) processed the data obtained by the RPL with a tomographic technique to conclude that the lunar subsoil is basically composed of highly porous granular materials with incorporation of rocks of various sizes.

Such content, it is believed, is due to disturbances of the early phases of the solar system, when meteors and other space objects frequently impacted the Moon, ejecting fragments of materials, creating craters and diversifying the lunar subsoil.

“The results illustrate, in an unprecedented way, the spatial distribution of different products that contribute to the formation of sequence of ejected materials and its geometric characteristics, “said Li Chunlai, professor and deputy director general of the OAN.

The researcher indicated that the wide use of the RPL could boost knowledge of the history of impacts and volcanism lunar and shed light on the geological evolution of the moon’s hidden face.
